CONTEMPORARY INDIAN
CINEMA – AN ANALOGY
Any structured introduction to actors implies constant and disparate opinions about their acting prowess, which vary from performance to
performance, depending on the audience to determine and unravel the potential capabilities
of the artist in the Indian Film Industry. Times have changed in the film
industry, the film actors with the assistance of an experimental contingent,
have been choosing substantial roles they prefer, in the modern era.
Tabu, a Star exhilarating with masterly creativeness, well known
for valorous experimentation in movies ,which have intrigue, suspense, mystery and
complexity, inspiring sensitive subtle distinction for creative new comers like
Tapsee Pannu and Bhumi.
Some of the new competent artists have established their
foothold proficiently, with conviction and commitment, giving outstanding performances,
entering the league of contemporary acting geniuses.
Kareena Kapoor with her acting talent has done few movies
with varied subject matter, known more for her style, leading young girls to
emulate her, has had fair share of success in cinema.
Kareena an actress with unique individuality cemented around
her, continues exhibiting her talent, whether in movies or in style. With some
of the notable performances, Parineeti Chopra, having a famous cousin, is
undoubtedly getting popular, showcasing her talent remarkably, enjoying well
deserved success in commercial cinema, in comparison to some of her colleagues.
A phenomenal body of art work by renowned directors Satyajit
Ray, Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen, Gulzar, Hrishikesh Mukerji, Mani Ratnam and few
more, with extraordinary portrayals, their genius artistry is universal. We
tend to critically analyze all the aspects of parallel cinema. Any film performer
in the chapter of analytical interpretation and conclusions of critics/
audience, about their acting skills is considered to be an accomplished actor.
They are expressive, intense, creative and brilliant be it
Shabana Azmi, Sanjeev Kumar, Nasiruddin
Shaw, Amol Palekar, Smita Patil, Farooque Sheikh, Rekha, Om Puri ,Tabu, Vidya Balan, such actors with gifted
excellence slide easily into fictional artistic forms with finesse, divert audience
to debate critical cognitive analysis of their unforgettable performances in
movies and making them relevant for systematic study in research settings.
It is hard to say how many actors have aptitude to work in
modern parallel cinema, knowing their limited artistic skills, it is essential
to have instinctive talent for artistic craftsmanship as there is no alternate
route to art cinema.
Regrettably, now a days, we can anticipate the predictable
tales of some of the movies, also accustomed to see so many new similar faces,
we find it challenging to differentiate them, displaying identical acting style
as if from the same school of acting and further trying to buttress their image
with social media bombardment. Earlier the acting talent of an artist was the
only ticket to success and fame, stories of sweat and blood of the struggling actors
abound, but ultimately gained some exceptional talent out of that grind, however
the recent actors are getting film awards without any significant performances,
which was never the case in earlier film felicitations.
The pre-release commemoration of movies is ritually
publicized and ceremonialized, even when imitating the fiction of past movies,
often awfully. A lot of new actors/actressses are becoming super stuntmen or ‘ITEM’ performers
in the movies, bizarrely, declared as icons/ divas certified by film experts,
depriving the audience of their acting craft. Not long ago, an actress with
limited acting skills, mostly doing commercial multi starrers, without any
notable performance, certainly having no capability and competence for cinema
and theatre, getting “Smita Patil Award” is baffling.
We curiously ponder over the recent spate of style awards
and the importance of becoming style icons without any commendable work,
experience and contribution to cinema, current film actors are turning into artefacts,
admiring their own decorated statues. As
famous Andy Warhol put it,’ In the future everybody will be World famous for 15
minutes”.
Kangana’s talent is absolute, needing no established names
of the Industry in her movies, with magnetic performances she is the most
successful today, living on her own terms. Alia Bhatt, a youngster, though
giving her best performance in “Udta Punjab” and few other films, has a long
way to enter the hall of fame of Indian cinema. Recent excellent performance by energetic Ranveer Singh who has unique ability, Gully Boy a point to prove,
makes him the leading actor today, followed by some of new actors like Ayushmann,
Raj Kumar, Nawazuddin and few more, don’t hesitate to delve into parallel
cinema, winning critical and mass acclaim.
There has been little attempt to improve the basic quality
of cinema, unfortunately, Indian films have not evolved, though released
globally, as the commercial success grows, the pressure on a movie maker is
continuous and audience demand good stories, scripts and great performances. In
every respect, the art of new narratives is almost inadequate, so is the acting
technique to adopt these meaningful characters, though some of the young
talent, male or female, in every aspect of filmmaking is leading the way to a
golden era of Indian Film Industry.
