PARVEEN BABI - HAPPY BIRTHDAY IN PARADISE

PARVEEN BABI - HAPPY BIRTHDAY IN PARADISE

Parveen Babi comes from the Babi lineage, a nobility of erstwhile princely State of Junagadh, an epitome of beauty, glamour and style, we remember her today on 70th birth anniversary. She grew up in a privileged background, the only child, though from conservative community, however was educated at Jesuits Mt. Carmel High School and thereafter graduated in English Literature from St. Xavier’s College.
She took up modelling during her college years, participating in fashion shows, during the time was approached for a movie role which she capitulated gracefully to the persistence of the film maker, though pretty satisfied with her modelling campaign. Since Babi clan was orthodox, Parveen Babi started her movie journey by convincing and assuring her mother, Jamal Bhakti Babi, that she would never misuse herself or Babi family name. She was discreet about her noble descent and felt strongly about her Indian identity, not as nobility of an erstwhile State.

As we reminisce today, the original diva and fashion icon of Indian Film industry, an epitome of sophistication, charm and beauty, Parveen Babi, incredibly feminine and petite, still illuminates us through the decades.
Parveen Babi never forgot her family genealogy, strong kinship ties with her extended family, known to be generous, gracious and affectionate. Despite being famous, she remained close to her roots. Later in her life she bequeathed a large sum from her charitable trust for the benefit of underprivileged children and women of the Babi clan in Junagadh, and some for her Alma mater, St. Xavier’s.
A femme fatale known for education, intelligence, style, and her pursuit of philosophy had strengthened extraordinary Parveen Babi, first ever Indian actress to have graced the cover of Time magazine in 1976, is arguably the most resplendent so far among other actresses featured on the Time cover from Indian film industry.
The iconic Parveen Babi still evokes our sensibility, as we reminisce today, an arresting beauty with lissome grace and elegance who revolutionized the young girls’ perception of style, glamour and fashion epitomized by two most glamourous women of the era, Parveen Babi and Zeenat Aman, decades later they still continue to inspire women.
Nostalgically, we remember, while watching the movie ‘Pati Patni aur Woh’, the exhilaration of the audience on sudden appearance of Parveen Babi briefly in the last scene, deeply imprinted in our memory.

In ‘Razia Sultana’, she spoke Urdu precisely and captured her character, though Hindi and Gujrati are spoken commonly around the area she grew up, however because of her westernized mien and typical Hindi diction, was portrayed as a Christian girl often. Brilliant Parveen Babi was one of the highest paid actresses of her times, worked with most of the famous film makers and plethora of actors/actresses, mesmerizing the audience with excellent performances in commercial cinema. When you see her singing, Raat Baaki or Mach Gaya Shor etc, Parveen Babi improvised and concentrated on reacting emotionally and authentically all times.
A non-conformist, Parveen Babi once admitted that, ‘I don’t believe in clinging to a person just to conform the social norm’, expressed her individuality and lead life with nonchalant attitude. She was always interested in architecture, sculptures, literature, cultural, archaeology and humanistic issues. She started her career in Interior designing in 1983, designing professionally for hotels.
With fond memories we remember our beloved Star on her birthday, whose stardom has surpassed her brief presence amidst us, forever smiling, forever enchanting.
As we celebrate her birth anniversary, she among the angels in heaven, eternally gorgeous, Parveen Babi we still have not learned to forget you.
“The angels looked down from heaven one night,
They searched for miles afar,
And deep within the distance
They could see a shining star.”

PARVEEN BABI - IN REMEMBRANCE

PARVEEN BABI - IN REMEMBRANCE This is in the memory of one of the most beautiful, educated and glamourous model turned actresses of Indian cinema, Parveen Babi. She was not only an exquisite beauty but highly talented girl who mesmerized audience with her screen presence and performance during her time in Indian film Industry. Parveen Babi, the only child, born to her parents after 14 years on 4th April 1949, went to Mount Carmel High School and ended up with a degree in English literature from St Xavier’s College Ahmedabad. From the beginning she had interest in painting, writing, reading and playing piano which she  continued till her later life. She was a simple fun- loving girl, with peculiar sense of humor and wanted to settle down happily married. Vying for love, happiness and fulfilment, destiny did not oblige, and played its part otherwise, leading to unhappiness and disappointments. Her journey in filmdom began with h

THE RISE OF ACTION GENRE - INDIAN ACTRESSES

THE RISE OF ACTION GENRE – INDIAN ACTRESSES The gradual progress of female action-oriented movies in Indian cinema started in late 80’s. The fundamental problem about the popularity and acceptance of heroine lead action movies in 80’s, continues to arise even at present, it is understandable with limited and prejudiced perception of audience about women in the dominant action roles, curtailed by the significant consideration extended to leading actors, with super heroes status, maintaining typical action formula. The quality of action-oriented film with inherent challenge requires natural talent with plausible personality and character. But it is only a decade since we are witnessing long delayed female action movies in modern times. At present, there are few female actresses, with merit, grit and determination to portray heroic roles and deserve ample opportunities to act in supreme performance action-centric movies. The debut of female ‘action act’ in Indian cinema was in
