The immense popularity of brilliant Tennis ace Sania Mirza, an exceptional persona that lives to its name with striking personality and simple memorable feminine nose ring accelerated in mid 2000's with the ultimate talent and genius on tennis courts, her outstanding performances and achievements portrayed Sania as an inspiration for youth as she emerged as a National sports Icon. Her success quickly galvanized the girls in that period into different games as traditionally, they were confined to certain sports like athletics, hockey etc, however very few attained fame, as earlier lawn tennis in India was restricted to few men, thereafter propelling women in badminton, boxing, wrestling, shooting etc.

The meteoric rise in the International women’s ranking (both in singles and doubles), the first for an Indian, eclipsed some of the Indian male tennis stars of the time, confident Sania aggressive and tough, with excellent reflexes, remarkable skill and timing on the court, her intense zeal and effervescence in competitions added universal appeal. She energized with outstanding and phenomenal success on court as well with her exuberance and flamboyance off court. Indians have enormous admiration for her determination, dedication and resolution, she has proved invariably by achieving on sturdy turf. A woman with ambition, vigour and vitality in life, Sania Mirza, is the most consistent and successful Tennis player in India, triumphed instinctively during challenging spells, winning six Grand slam titles in her career, stands tall amidst all.

She has experienced stardom, the reality of public idolatry  and accolades from a very  early age, positively adjusted to the adulation since the outset of her career, defining her character and personality, she also motivates herself to enunciate social and societal issues, and she is the first sportswomen to become UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia.

‘Sania is one of India’ s most successful women athletes, Sania Mirza is an inspiration to millions
of young women across Asia. Sania is an outstanding example of the excellence that women can
achieve when they level the playing field.’

                                                            Lise Grande,
United Nations Resident Coordinator

Sania Mirza will co-chair, along with Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh Prime Minister, World Economic Forum in New Delhi, representing India, a forum where hundreds of Indian and global leaders will showcase India on the World stage, scheduled in October 2019. Sania is a strong supporter of upliftment of the girls in India, removing inherent stigmas and prejudices against girls in the Indian contemporary society, women empowerment especially in sports. She established, Sania Mirza Tennis Academy in 2013, to encourage rural talent to strengthen India’s performance in Tennis, and to provide enough opportunities for under-privileged athletes, the Academy offers world class training to the youngsters at affordable cost. She has also supported the cause of equal pay for women players in Tennis and other sports.

“We as people who achieve so much need to be example to women. It’s our responsibility
to try and educate people in India that having a girl is a plus, not a minus. As a woman, I
want to do everything I can to spread the word’’

                                                                                               Sania Mirza

Sania besides winning International Tennis trophies, highest Indian Sports and Civil awards, has been placed in the list of the ‘50 Heroes of Asia’ by Time in 2005. In March 2010, The Economics Times named her among the ‘33’ woman who made India proud, she was also one of the 100 most influential people in the World, of Time Magazine’s 2016 listing and the most searched person in Google in 2010.

A stylish personality, Sania Mirza regularly participates in fashion shows, gracing the ramp with her confident persona, has received appreciation she deserves, perfectly knows that her actions are emulated by young sports girls of the country. Full of wit and vivacity, she is a regular on the TV talk and reality shows as well as in lot of social events, Nationally and Internationally. She is also an avid user of various social media apps, airing her personal opinions on relevant causes. For the same, she is more susceptible to the deplorable reactions of the ogres of social media, mercilessly insulting, in context or out of context, traumatizing personally with defamatory and offensive narrative.  It is true, lack of civility is in full steam to some in the contemporary society, with heartless gratitude, such trolls with indecent, humiliating and distasteful comments have massive support of authoritative media with penchant to aggravate trivial issues, hosting uncivil debates to fetch argumentative and sensational headlines globally.

‘I don’t play tennis to prove a point to anyone. I play for my country and myself. It is not changing
what people say or think. It’s about what I can do. If I feel I have the ability to achieve something
and haven’t used my potential to that end, I’ll keep trying till I succeed.’

                                                                                           Sania Mirza

A few years back, it was distressing to witness teary eyed National Icon, after critical media reaction almost coerced to justify her nationalism on National TV. Why the issue of her nationality is being raised every time, followed by atrocious comments, Sania is wise and tenacious to slam online troublemakers. How do we comprehend trolling a role model, who makes India proud, illogically absurd, petty and the social goblins envy anyone pretty, smart and glamourous, Sania Mirza is no exception, subjected to constant cyber bullying, definitely the distorted misinterpretation would create dubious narrative in a civilized society, goes through public scrutiny for almost any action in tennis, cricket or public life, the excessive surveillance has made her more vigorous and hardy.

She is competitive, combines tremendous determination with reliability, wanted to end her career due to severe wrist injury in 2010, however Sania Mirza, a fighter and a survivor, with her resilient spirit, rebounded back. She played last at the China Open in 2017, out of action since October 2017 due to injuries and surgeries in the past, and after motherhood, she is currently preparing to make a comeback by January 2020 for Tokyo Olympics.

Sania Mirza has strong beliefs and values, incredibly aspirational and inspirational, spirited and magnetic, the qualities that epitomize the sport, also catalyst for change and growth in sports for women which have since soared in popularity in India, the tennis ace will win many match points in her future endeavours, in sport and whatever destined  pathway she adopts - a true champion.

Sania recently stated, ‘I want to achieve more’, with her natural talent, proving herself the best again and winning at the highest level, Sania Mirza a symbol of prestige and milestones has enough potential to be back for bigger landmarks.

PARVEEN BABI - IN REMEMBRANCE

PARVEEN BABI - IN REMEMBRANCE This is in the memory of one of the most beautiful, educated and glamourous model turned actresses of Indian cinema, Parveen Babi. She was not only an exquisite beauty but highly talented girl who mesmerized audience with her screen presence and performance during her time in Indian film Industry. Parveen Babi, the only child, born to her parents after 14 years on 4th April 1949, went to Mount Carmel High School and ended up with a degree in English literature from St Xavier’s College Ahmedabad. From the beginning she had interest in painting, writing, reading and playing piano which she  continued till her later life. She was a simple fun- loving girl, with peculiar sense of humor and wanted to settle down happily married. Vying for love, happiness and fulfilment, destiny did not oblige, and played its part otherwise, leading to unhappiness and disappointments. Her journey in filmdom began with h

THE RISE OF ACTION GENRE - INDIAN ACTRESSES

THE RISE OF ACTION GENRE – INDIAN ACTRESSES The gradual progress of female action-oriented movies in Indian cinema started in late 80’s. The fundamental problem about the popularity and acceptance of heroine lead action movies in 80’s, continues to arise even at present, it is understandable with limited and prejudiced perception of audience about women in the dominant action roles, curtailed by the significant consideration extended to leading actors, with super heroes status, maintaining typical action formula. The quality of action-oriented film with inherent challenge requires natural talent with plausible personality and character. But it is only a decade since we are witnessing long delayed female action movies in modern times. At present, there are few female actresses, with merit, grit and determination to portray heroic roles and deserve ample opportunities to act in supreme performance action-centric movies. The debut of female ‘action act’ in Indian cinema was in

KAJOL - A CLOISTERED TALENT

KAJOL - A CLOISTERED TALENT Having immense allure like her mother, but not as vivacious, Kajol with beauty, extraordinaire talent and versatile artistry has been brightening Indian Cinema with her metier. Born into illustrious Samarth-Mukherjee family, which has had a long cinematic history, going back four generations, having prominent feminist role models from the times of Bombay Talkies, if there was such a thing as ‘acting genes’ Kajol certainly has them in abundance and does justice to any role she enacts. In all her movies, Kajol engages and blends into the character and her forte is spontaneity. She is instinctive and apparently walks literally into a scene with her natural fluster, without any extra effort or histrionics, a talent not many actors have, she illuminates naturally on the cue ‘lights, camera, action’, and promptly sparkles the canvas. An actress who has given innumerable commercial hits, reigned from mid 90's and consistently giving phenomenal perform
