I AM “NOT” LEGEND – WILL SMITH

I AM “NOT” LEGEND – WILL SMITH

The prestigious 94th Academy Awards stage pulsating with Hollywood glitz and glamour, a star-studded night in all its beauty, grandeur, splendour and magnificence, heightened with creative energies and wit of the presenters was enthralling TV viewers around the globe. In a flash, liberal use of expletives and infamous slap to the presenter Chris Rock by multiple award-winning idol Will Smith filled the gala evening with shock and disbelief. This incident has given us considerable reason to think rationally that violence is outside the realm of human behaviour, even in a modern progressive world with unlimited scientific and technological advancement, we are ethically and principally flawed in terms of resilience, compassion and humility, compared with earlier times.

The Oscar’s spectacular show with artistic inspiration in a bright and starry night kept us glued to TV sets. Will Smith’s emotional outburst created hype, generated more buzz and he became a key figure in the grand award night, his aggressiveness exceeded when he gave a loud and terrible roar of disapproval and unnecessarily created absurd drama. He is a modern media idol and his offensive performance captured the alert public eye. Lately, there has been a lot of ‘Will Smith’ bashing in public domain, while social media acts like a useful tool for world famous celebrities to connect with their fans, nevertheless there is much brutish criticism directed at him with taunts and jeers. Due to his unexpected verbal vulgarity and a single physical blow in a global event, Will Smith overnight became the talk of the town.

The negative repercussions have given rise to hilarious memes on mass media, with much meaningful scrutiny, Will Smith has become a controversial and amusing public character. It is generally known that trending memes tend to divide society, as most loyal and crazy fans differ, encounter one another with fanatical utterances on global networking sites, such irresponsible act by a ‘Super Star’ helps to promote rabid groups in the world.

We always have something to listen and learn from famous and powerful figures who act as role models for others and set an example for the world to follow. They are very strong influencers of society and the enthusiastic youth look upon them as their guiding light. Will Smith is an actor whose talent, personality, behaviour and success can be emulated by all, nevertheless, his aggressive deed in front of millions of viewers, exhibited negative impact on general public. Violence is irrational destructive force and the occurrence of vicious act in a distinguished festivity, whatever provocation may have been, does not justify ‘wild west’ reaction.  All standards of modern chivalry in our society do not support the medieval behaviour, perhaps we have lost ethos of civility, there are no healthy debates, making humanity more polarized and brutal.

The escalation of intolerance, prejudice, and dogmatism catalyse extreme hostility in a civilized society and the arguments are centred around to belittle and degrade people endlessly. It is not surprising that appearances are deceptive, obviously some of the show business luminaries with their own signature style, delusory outward appearance, manipulated power and elite social status consider themselves as highly learned, deplorably they still command respect on audio-visual media.

Few actors pull out ridiculous acts to be regularly in media limelight and thereafter they try to make amends with apology, shed public tears on global platform.

The voguish and gorgeous ‘A-listers’ royal welcome walk on red carpet in designer attires, makes a splash in high society fashion and brings cheer to our lives. Their breath taking, graceful and winsome images in best glossy glamour magazines, clicked by fashion photographers take the lead for new high-end fashion standards in society. We try to emulate picture perfect flawless and positive role models, who act as eternal source of inspiration and take pride in their high moral values. Most of the actors with enthusiasm, perseverance, dedication and commitment motivate youth. They are remarkably devoted to hard work, openly discuss mental health issues and have been involved in humanitarian work and charity.

On the other hand, a minority of protagonists with immorality, display malicious, destructive, hurtful and unpredictable actions. Their inherent deep psychological problems intensify violent aggression and they end up becoming a riotous and fraudulent creature in their own complex story. The bitter truth is that a specific number of people in showbiz crave for fictitious popularity, and a high-profile person’s strange behaviour is harsh, reveals hypocrisy which is morally indefensible. There is no doubt that he has become non legend in the annals of Oscar history, Will Smith unleashed his rage, set a bad example and youth might be led to believe that its chivalrous to be violent. Deservedly, he has been widely condemned for this unprecedented incident in history of Oscars.

In modern age, the public code of morality is very important for integrity, beliefs, values, ethics and cultural evolution. It is well-reasoned that the moral goodness never fails and strengthens the nobility of human motives at different levels. In order to become good role models, the influential people should engage themselves in a critical self-reflection and act with humility.

Will Smith did grave wrong to Chris Rock and his vicious slap stunned the world, in a moral judgement, the Oscar slapped a ban on him and his ostracization by the film fraternity has restored rules of conduct for future generations. He has become non legend in the annals of Oscar history

PARVEEN BABI - IN REMEMBRANCE This is in the memory of one of the most beautiful, educated and glamourous model turned actresses of Indian cinema, Parveen Babi. She was not only an exquisite beauty but highly talented girl who mesmerized audience with her screen presence and performance during her time in Indian film Industry. Parveen Babi, the only child, born to her parents after 14 years on 4th April 1949, went to Mount Carmel High School and ended up with a degree in English literature from St Xavier’s College Ahmedabad. From the beginning she had interest in painting, writing, reading and playing piano which she  continued till her later life. She was a simple fun- loving girl, with peculiar sense of humor and wanted to settle down happily married. Vying for love, happiness and fulfilment, destiny did not oblige, and played its part otherwise, leading to unhappiness and disappointments. Her journey in filmdom began with h

THE RISE OF ACTION GENRE - INDIAN ACTRESSES

THE RISE OF ACTION GENRE – INDIAN ACTRESSES The gradual progress of female action-oriented movies in Indian cinema started in late 80’s. The fundamental problem about the popularity and acceptance of heroine lead action movies in 80’s, continues to arise even at present, it is understandable with limited and prejudiced perception of audience about women in the dominant action roles, curtailed by the significant consideration extended to leading actors, with super heroes status, maintaining typical action formula. The quality of action-oriented film with inherent challenge requires natural talent with plausible personality and character. But it is only a decade since we are witnessing long delayed female action movies in modern times. At present, there are few female actresses, with merit, grit and determination to portray heroic roles and deserve ample opportunities to act in supreme performance action-centric movies. The debut of female ‘action act’ in Indian cinema was in

KAJOL - A CLOISTERED TALENT

KAJOL - A CLOISTERED TALENT Having immense allure like her mother, but not as vivacious, Kajol with beauty, extraordinaire talent and versatile artistry has been brightening Indian Cinema with her metier. Born into illustrious Samarth-Mukherjee family, which has had a long cinematic history, going back four generations, having prominent feminist role models from the times of Bombay Talkies, if there was such a thing as ‘acting genes’ Kajol certainly has them in abundance and does justice to any role she enacts. In all her movies, Kajol engages and blends into the character and her forte is spontaneity. She is instinctive and apparently walks literally into a scene with her natural fluster, without any extra effort or histrionics, a talent not many actors have, she illuminates naturally on the cue ‘lights, camera, action’, and promptly sparkles the canvas. An actress who has given innumerable commercial hits, reigned from mid 90's and consistently giving phenomenal perform
